A New York Minute…

I love New York…I think it’s the one city (apart from, perhaps, Tokyo) I could move to. Each time I go I find new corners, neighbourhoods, restaurants, shops – it doesn’t stop moving. I’m a real city girl at heart and it just calls to me…

After staying in Williamsburg last time, which we love, we chose to be back in Manhattan the trip – for the shows it’s just easier to get around. Booking this trip back in January (using miles we flew for £400 return Premium Economy!) I also booked The Jane hotel around the same time. I had heard of it before and the rates were really reasonable for New York plus the location was amazing…5 minute walk to the Meatpacking District and in the heart of the West village. The hotel itself was a bit tired but we loved the non fanciness of it – no one jumping over themselves to grab your bags or trying to hail you a taxi – staff were there when needed, the rooms were a bit ‘vintagey’ with super clean bathrooms and it was perfect for us (baring in mind you spend approx 8 hours a day in your room, to sleep only).  If you’re looking for superb location and reasonable rooms, I would definitely recommend it (but I have also earmarked the Arlo for next time – minimal cool at the bottom of Soho).

We loved walking round the West Village, the streets were so quiet and local but just a short walk from The High Line or Bleecker Street – we barely used the Metro – and we always ate dinner locally, which is my dream whilst away (Barbuto was pricey but great atmosphere and delicious – good to share dishes with friends, Mole is a cute Mexican just a few streets away and for brunch, Bubby’s is great but make sure you go hungry).

And now to the clothes…New York did not disappoint with the weather and was a mild 21-23 degrees the entire time with glorious sunshine. So it was perfect bare leg weather, yet still chilly enough in the shade to need a light knit – the ideal ‘opposites attract’ temperature of bare legs with oversized knit. My kind of style.

And the earrings? I wasn’t sure if yellow was wintery enough but in fact they’re almost mustard, which is a great shade for Autumn and they really lift the black and grey safer pieces. Basically I have a new life motto which is “if in doubt, add earrings” and the bigger and brighter the better.

This post was in collaboration with Next, but it was still my favourite outfit of the week.

  1. It’s so funny what you said about New York because it’s exactly what I think about London. I was born and raised in NY, but if I had to move, London is the only other city I think I could happily live in. I’d actually prefer to leave the country and move there over living anywhere else in the States outside of New York. Cute earrings!

  2. I LOVE this outfit. It doesn’t look like Next (in a good way, but not trying to diss Next), and those earrings are amazing. They really take the outfit to the next level. Love your styling, as always.

  3. Love this look and love the blog, Alex.
This post, and a few other of your recent posts, have made me re-consider Next a bit. I’m 31 and would never, ever have bought form there before (sorry, Next!) They have a great Prince of Wales check blazer at the moment which I’m eyeing up, much like one you’ve worn recently I think.
Keep up the ace content! X
